15 A highlighted festivity

Of all the visits that Gaudí made to Riudoms, one stands out among the others. It took place on November 19, 1922 and coincided with the acts that were celebrated to the blessing of the flag of the local civilian guard, in which there was embroidered the mountain chain of Montserrat and its patroness.

The civilian guard is an auxiliary body of the public order in the rural area, destined to protect the properties from the assaults of thieves and other malefactors. On that day, the festivity counted on the presence of the general captain of Catalonia, Michael Primo de Rivera, later dictator, and of the Marquess of Marianao and Vilanova i the Geltrú. Several activities took place in the same event: a liturgical trade in the Major Square, the benediction of the flag, a parade, the speeches of the authorities, a cantata coral, etc.

It is in the course of these acts that Antoni Gaudí was photographed with the civilian guard in the stairs of the Major Square. Keeping in mind the architects reluctance to being photographed, this gesture demonstrated his affection to the town of his birthplace and saw him grow.
